Project Profile – Brynmill Buddies
Catrin spent the morning volunteering at Brynmill Buddies and here is what she experienced whilst volunteering.
On Tuesday morning, I took part in my first ever volunteering project with Brynmill Buddies. At first, I was nervous, as I had never done something like this before, but immediately stepping through the door I was welcomed warmly by the project coordinators Judith and Rish. All of my nerves disappeared within ten minutes of being there, and the two hours ended up flying by.
Brynmill Buddies takes place in the Brynmill Community Centre on St Albans Road. The huge space allows for energetic games such as table tennis, or if you’re feeling less active, in the back room you can sit around the table with everyone and drink a relaxing coffee or tea. In brighter weather, the project offers gardening at the back, and though I did not get to participate (due to rain), I think gardening would be such a wonderful way to have fun and be productive together. On rainier days you can play cards, get creative, or simply chat and learn more about what makes people tick. In my experience there, I met some wonderful people and learned some new card games that will now make me look cooler at parties, so thank you Brynmill Buddies.
A diverse range of people come to Brynmill Buddies, offering a variety of stories and insights. Interacting with members from the community is important, especially for students, as coming together into one group such as Brynmill Buddies creates a closer sense of community throughout Swansea. What stood out to me was that connections and company seem to be the priority to those at Brynmill Buddies. The entire project carries an air of positivity, not only from the volunteers but also from the community members who gave the project so much life. I had a great time at Brynmill Buddies, I will definitely be going back, and I recommend it strongly to anyone who enjoys a room of friendly faces and interesting conversation.
