Supported Volunteering

What is the Supported Volunteering Scheme?

Discovery is passionate about making volunteering accessible for everyone, and our Supported Volunteering Scheme is an important part of how we do that.
The Supported Volunteering Scheme works with adults with learning disabilities, Autism Spectrum Conditions, mental health conditions, physical disabilities and other challenges. We support them with volunteering with us, in other departments in the University or with other charities.

We train student volunteers to work with and support the volunteers. Supported volunteers are paired with a student volunteer who they work with every session. Together they help people in and around Swansea in various ways through their volunteering. Whilst volunteering together they also work to develop confidence and skills as individuals.

The Supported Volunteering Scheme provides person-centered, accessible volunteering opportunities for adults with additional needs. Started formally in 2014, we now have more than 20 volunteers with various support needs working as part of our team.
