‘Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, what are you doing for others?’ Martin Luther King Jnr

Discovery is a student-led volunteer charitable organisation based in Swansea who runs a number of volunteering projects that help many different groups within Swansea. Discovery has been working in Swansea for over 50 years, helping the most disadvantaged people in the community: older people, refugees, people with additional needs, and children and young people. All of our projects are co-ordinated by student volunteers who find that volunteering can be rewarding and fulfilling work. We are currently looking for students to lead our projects for 2020-21.

Becoming a volunteering project coordinator has many benefits. As a project coordinator for Discovery, you will have the opportunity to showcase your skills, gain new skills and put these into practice through team leadership. Additionally, by helping to recruit other volunteers for Discovery’s many volunteering projects you be become part of something life changing, for yourself and for others.

Each project will have one or two project coordinators who will be responsible for leading the groups of volunteers. Project coordinators with Discovery will take the lead role in the planning and coordinating of volunteer work to certify that all activities will be finished safely and effectively.

Additional training such as conflict management and first aid are available and can provide valuable life skills and a useful way to boost your skills for the future. Volunteering is a win-win situation: you give, and you get back. Volunteering with Discovery can help to boost your CV and can increase your chances of gaining paid employment in the wider job market. We will also be delighted to provide you with a reference if you are applying for jobs and internships!

Volunteering is a great way to play a key role in making a genuine difference to a diverse range of people in Swansea as well as the opportunity to meet like-minded people and form new friendships at university.

Project Coordinators may also consider opportunities to become involved in creating digital content to promote Discovery’s projects, both online and in the community.

As a student lead charity, you will be encouraged to be creative, to design and plan new projects – previous students have done this, many of whose ideas continue today in our existing projects.

If you are interested in becoming a project coordinator do get in touch with us by emailing discovery@swansea.ac.uk to find out more information. The deadline to apply for the role is Monday 31st August.

Potential project coordinators will then be contacted and invited to an informal online interview with the Volunteering Projects manager which will present you with a fantastic opportunity to ask us about the role and responsibilities of being a project coordinator as well as the projects on offer.
