Give It a Go Week from a student’s perspective
At the beginning of the Give It a Go Week, I volunteered at Welcome to Swansea Letters. We wrote positive and welcoming messages for refugees arriving at Swansea. We wrote about our favourite places in Swansea to visit, about the beauty of the local area and possible activities to take part in Swansea.
We drew nice and positive things on the cards for the refugees to feel welcome. For example, I drew a rose on one of the cards and words crossed on another. It made me think more about the refugees’ situation in the UK, their feelings, experiences. I hope this made them feel more welcome here.
My next session was Supported Volunteering/Active 18 on Zoom. We talked about our favourite movies, TV shows we’d recently watched, and just had a friendly chat about our weekend! We chatted about our pets; we were brainstorming what a flag representing us could look like! It helps people to stay connected to the local community, meet new friends, and learn new things. Not only do we, as volunteers, learn new things but also our supported adults gain new skills. I enjoyed being a part of this and will certainly come back.
