Creative competition – Student Volunteering Week Experience
Held from the 7th– 13th February 2022, student volunteering week (SWV) was a fantastic opportunity for students to undertake volunteering in a relaxed, friendly environment with no previous experience required.
With numerous events held – from craft sessions to circus skills – there was something for everyone. In this blog, I will share with you my experience of student volunteering week.
About Inspire
As part of SWV, I took part in the Discovery SVS Inspire Project on the 11th February.
According to Project Coordinator Ms Cooke, Inspire “creates weekly activities for children and young people in line with the NHS 5 ways to wellbeing.”
Although predominantley virtual, this project helps volunteers explore their creative side by putting together “treat packs…filled with activities and games” in person to be delivered once a term.’
How it went
Using virtual platform Zoom, a small team of six volunteers (myself included) were given several tasks in order to compete for a £5.00 Greggs voucher (goldmine if you study on Singleton campus).
Activities ranged from spelling out the word ‘discovery’ using household objects, showcasing our best purple object, drawing aliens with many eyes, and attempting to draw an elephant with no hands (yes this was as hard as you think it was).
Those chosen by the Project Coordinator as the most creative gained points and whoever gained the most points would win the prize.
Although I (sadly) did not win the voucher, my overall experience of the event was creative, uplifting, and most importantly fun.
As such, I would highly recommend volunteering with Discovery SVS. By building your confidence, improving mental wellbeing, and benefitting the community there is nothing to lose!
