International Women’s Day
Tuesday 8th March is International Women’s Day (IWD). Many countries celebrate IWD to recognise the achievement of women all around the world. This year’s theme is ‘Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow’ (United National).
IWD is a worldwide day to celebrate women’s social, cultural, political, and economic contributions. These efforts and achievements of women are recognised by many around the world, but biases still exist, and women still face inequalities every day. Even in the 20th century, globally, women still earn 13% less than men.
IWD aims to raise awareness of women’s inequalities. We must encourage the break from these biases of women. We have a long way to go, but we can break down these inequalities and make the world a fair place for women to work and live.
Discovery Student Volunteering
It is common in volunteering to experience a predominantly female group of volunteers. UK statistics suggest that the volunteer sector in Britain correlates to approximately 65% females. The statistic is supported by Discovery’s student volunteer pool, with a large proportion of our student volunteers being women. At discovery, we promote equality for all, facilitated through our projects. We ensure that discovery is an equal and fair place for all to volunteer women and men!
What can we do to help?
We can start by simply saying thank you to women and acknowledging the hard work and efforts they commit to in our societies.
We can appreciate their work and encourage them to promote positive environments to work and live, enabling women to follow their ambitions and achieve their dreams.
We hope everyone has a happy International Women’s Day. We want you to know that we celebrate every woman in our Discovery family to achieve whatever they wish to do. We strive to provide a happy and safe place for all our volunteers while allowing them to obtain a network of friends and supporters to assist with their life-long goals.
‘Every Woman’s success should be an inspiration to another. We’re the strongest when we cheer each other on’, said Serena Williams.
