Student Trustee Profile – Devarshi Raval. (Treasurer)

/ March 11, 2022/ Uncategorized

Devarshi is currently a 2nd-year student studying Economics and Finance. She is a confident and determined student who has always looked for opportunities to improve her personal and career development.

Devarshi has been volunteering with Discovery for two years. Last year being a non-portfolio student trustee and the Chair of Fundraising, Devarshi understands how our charity operates and its purpose to make a real difference in the community. This year Devarshi has decided to take up the challenge as Treasurer and Chair of Finance and Funding and is excited to see where this year takes us as the board of trustees.

Devarshi decided to apply for the treasurer role due to her growing fascination with Corporate Governance, Law, Public Policy, and her pre-existing interests in business and capital markets. She has also been able to expand her role and responsibilities in Discovery and become more involved with the finance, fundraising, and legal obligations that come with it.

Less than 3% of charity trustees are under 30; this will help Devarshi stand out from the crowd. She firmly believes that Discovery has pushed her out of her comfort zone and allowed her to work for the same purpose in a team of like-minded people. Devarshi states that she has gained invaluable experience in the third sector, which will stay with her for life and help her excel with her professional career. The job roles at Discovery have given her total exposure to Risk Management and Compliance Law and the experience to pursue a career in this.

We asked Devarshi, what is your favourite thing about Discovery?

What I love about Discovery is how it started with a small group of students who wanted to impact their community. Now, 50 years later, it has grown into such a strong network of like-minded people, working together to fulfill its purpose.

Discovery has opened opportunities for students to express their volunteering interests and opened up job opportunities for adults passionate about their work and what Discovery does.

The dedicated staff within Discovery are supportive and always there to guide you along the way. The other student trustees are always there to listen, even if it’s not related to Discovery. Being a trustee has been one of the best experiences of university so far.
