Being The Vetch Project Coordinator
Hi, I’m Rhiannon a third year history and politics student, and I was a Project Co-Ordinator for the Vetch! I started volunteering on the Vetch project in my first year, so when the PC was available I decided to try and challenge myself and go for it. The Vetch was a project that consisted of 2hours a week at the Vetch Community Garden helping with whatever jobs were on the to-do list; this ranged from fixing garden beds and greenhouses to planting in our very own beds. I would also attend an office hour in the Discovery office so that I could catch up on my emails and stay on top of the admin stuff. Once you get your head around all of the things that you need to do it doesn’t take that long to sort it so I often spent the office hour going through Discovery’s snack box.
The Vetch is an incredible project that shows how even a couple hours volunteering can mean so much to those we help. Being PC meant that I could introduce new people to the Vetch and give ourselves a break from studying. I found I became more confident and decisive in my time as a PC, as for the first time I had taken on a role with more responsibility. I was supported all the way through by the Discovery team so anytime I was unsure I could find a solution. I could also arrange socials for volunteers for us to be able to get to know each other better and build more of a community.
To any student who is considering becoming a Project Co-Ordinator I say go for it!! It’s a great experience and you can challenge yourself in an environment where you are completely supported. It is a weekly commitment but your office hour is flexible to your timetable and you will have some amazing volunteers in your team who will be there to help you too. If you are interested at all, take the risk because I have never regretted doing so.
