Being a Project Coordinator has been one of the best parts of my time at University
Hi, my name is Liv! I’m a third year Psychology student and I’m the project coordinator (PC) for Active 18! I started volunteering at Discovery in my second year on the Supported Volunteer Scheme and absolutely loved it, which is why I decided to become a PC this year!
This project never fails to make me smile. The people that Active 18 supports are so kindhearted and funny, and I always leave sessions giggling and feeling so much happier. Working with disabled adults has taught me so much- I have learned how to have conversations with all different kinds of people and about how to support people to suit their needs. Being the Active 18 PC is really about making people happy and helping them to achieve their goals, and it is the most wholesome and rewarding role!
I have planned parties and trips this year which have all been so much fun, and I weirdly enjoy making the risk assessments (although there is lots of support in case this isn’t your thing!). The accessible clubbing trip to Cardiff was truly the highlight of my year, I can still remember how much my face hurt from smiling so much!
Being a PC at Discovery has been one of the best parts of my time at University and having the hands-on experience has taught me so much. I am so grateful to have met so many lovely people and to have gained so many skills that will help me in my career.
Being a PC for Active 18 has been so exciting, and you will have lots of support from staff to help you, especially at the start of the year when things feel new and exciting but also a little bit daunting. The number of hours you put in is flexible, but I usually do 2 hours weekly in the office where I can ask questions, and then you can plan the events around the times that work for you.
I cannot recommend being a PC for Active 18 enough, it really has been the highlight of my time at University and I have made so many incredible memories and friends.
