Stepping Into Leadership
When Naman Kumar took on the role of Project Coordinator for the Penpal Project at Discovery, he didn’t fully grasp how much it would shape his confidence, career, and perspective on leadership. At the time, he was looking for opportunities to develop new skills and make an impact, but he didn’t expect just how much he would grow in the process.

“Being responsible for leading a project meant stepping outside of my comfort zone,”
Naman reflects. “I had to take initiative, manage people, and ensure things ran smoothly. This wasn’t just about organizing tasks- it was about learning how to bring people together, solve problems, and guide a team toward a shared goal.”

Learning to Lead and Inspire
One of the biggest takeaways from this experience for Naman was learning how to work with a variety of people. Every team member had different strengths, ideas and ways of working. His job was not only to manage them but also to create an environment where everyone felt heard and valued.

“I quickly realized that leadership isn’t about controlling- it’s about inspiring”, he explains. “A great leader supports and empowers their team rather than dictating every move. I learned to listen more, to be patient and to adapt my approach depending on the situation.” These skills, he notes, have been invaluable in every aspect of his career since then.

Facing Challenges Head-On
Like any leadership role, being a Project Coordinate came with its challenges. Naman recalls moments when things didn’t go according to plan- time when he had to navigate difficult conversations, make tough decisions or think on his feet when unexpected issues arose. But those moments taught him resilience.

“Instead of seeing obstacles as setbacks, I learned to see them as opportunities to grow,” he says. “I became more solution-oriented, more confident in my ability handle pressure, and more comfortable with uncertainty. These are the kinds of skills that don’t just help in leadership roles- they help in life.”

How This Experience Boosted His Career
Looking back, Naman confidently says that his name as a Project Coordinator set him up for success in ways he never imagined. It strengthened his CV, gave him real-world experience to discuss in interviews, and made him stand out when applying for roles.

“Beyond the professional benefits, it also changed the way I see myself”, he shares. “I now have the confidence to step into leadership roles, take on new responsibilities, and trust in my ability to guide a team.”

His Advice to Future Project Coordinators
To anyone considering becoming a Project Coordinator, Naman’s message is clear: do it.
“You’ll grow in ways you can’t predict, and you’ll come out of it with skills and confidence that will serve you for years to come,” he encourages.
“Leadership isn’t something you’re just born with; it’s something you build. And there’s no better place to start than a supportive, hands- on role like this one.”
