Volunteering can make you feel good!
Volunteering can bring many benefits, both to those around and to those involved in volunteer activities. As long as there are will and enthusiasm, anyone can make a contribution to the world in this way. Check our Discovery Training program here Discovery’s Training Programme – Discovery SVS.
There are dozens of reasons why you should volunteer, but we’ve focused on four reasons why on why to spend more time volunteering while boosting your well-being:
1. You make new friends
One of the best ways to meet new people and build a lasting friendship is through volunteering. Depending on the organization you choose to volunteer for, you will meet people who have the same interests, who are fighting alongside you for a common cause. Volunteering can also help you overcome your shyness and develop your socializing skills.
2. Volunteering makes you feel fulfilled
Nothing compares to the feeling that you have contributed to the community you belong to or that you have helped less fortunate people.
Moreover, scientists have shown that volunteering makes you happier because it reduces stress and makes you healthier. According to helpguide.org, when you channel your energy to help someone else you are less tense, it gives you a sense of belonging and makes you more confident in your own strength. Volunteering also makes you even healthier. Our moods and emotions strengthen the immune system. The work of a volunteer is indispensable and really contributes to a cause that can transcend the community in which you live.
3. Discover the reality around you
It is easy to live in a bubble, disconnected from what is happening in the world, but sooner or later we will still encounter the less beautiful parts of the world we live in. And we can’t wait for the world to get better on its own, we have to get involved. When we volunteer, we discover the vulnerabilities of the world we live in and we can help strengthen them. Volunteering also helps you understand why, although a problem does not affect you personally, it affects society as a whole and it takes all our efforts to find a solution.
4. You are the change you want in the world
We cannot claim that things will work out on their own, or that the authorities will be so efficient as to solve all the world’s problems without help. The only way to make sure that you are working on solutions for the cause that concerns you is to roll up your sleeves and get personally involved. At the end of the day, you will fall asleep thinking that you have helped solve a problem that affects thousands of people. There are hundreds of social causes that are worth your time, whether they are homeless, victims of domestic violence, or people with deficiencies. And volunteers are an essential part of the mechanism for correcting these injustices.
