Discovery SVS Fundraising Squad March Activities

/ March 19, 2021/ Uncategorized

For March 2021, our Fundraising Squad at Discovery SVS are fundraising towards ending homelessness with Crisis.

Why Crisis?

The Fundraising Squad have chosen Crisis as their cause this term as they felt that the pandemic had opened their eyes to how important having a place to call home is.

Homelessness in the UK

We know that right now across Britain, hundreds of thousands of people are still experiencing the worst forms of homelessness. From sleeping on our streets, sofa-surfing far away from their loved ones, or spending months or even years stuck in unsuitable accommodation like B&Bs.

With the economic impact of the virus raging on, we know many more people are at risk of being pushed into homelessness for the first time, as they battle to pay their rent and bills as jobs are lost and wages are cut.

We’ve seen that when homelessness is made a priority, we can work together to bring people off the streets and stop people from losing their homes. To truly end homelessness, we must move beyond short-term solutions and address the root causes such as the lack of genuinely affordable housing.

Defining Homelessness

The meaning of homelessness is a person or persons that do not have a home where they can stay, forcing them to live on the streets. Homelessness is a dangerous and isolating situation that can occur in a person’s life. One can become homeless for a number of different reasons including, but not limited to: an increase in rent whilst receiving low income, losing a job, lack of availability in affordable housing. Unfortunately, the list goes on.

Fundraising Squad Activities

After finding out that currently in the UK there are over 200,000 households that are homeless, the Fundraising Squad have decided to walk/run/skip 200 miles between them to represent those households homeless today.

To complete these miles the squad will be sharing their miles amongst one another and their social media connections to encourage their communities to support.

The team are looking for people to support in any of these three ways:

  1. By donating to the cause using the link: https://www.kindlink.com/fundraising/Discovery-SVS/crisis
  • By taking part in reaching those 200 miles where non-members of the project can help by sharing their miles on social media using the hashtag #HelpDiscoveryEndHomelessness
  • By sharing the squad’s social media posts on non-members’ own platforms to help spread the word about the fundraising their carrying out

If you’re a student and would like to get involved in this project, please send us an email at discovery@swansea.ac.uk.
