How to Volunteer

All our volunteers need to go through our volunteer induction process, where you get introduced to Discovery and receive volunteer training. If this process is confusing or you need any support, please do get in touch with us by emailing discovery@swansea.ac.uk.

Discovery has a rolling program of training, one-off volunteering, and virtual volunteering opportunities. You can get involved in these opportunities whilst going through the induction process, and we encourage you to participate as it means you get a taste of volunteering straight away! You can see our one off program here.

To create an account, go to the Discovery volunteering homepage. This platform is used to find volunteering opportunities, log your volunteered hours, and book induction training sessions with the in-house staff team.

Following making the account, you will be sent a volunteering workbook to complete before your induction training.

This is our in-house training that will give you a 90 minute crash course in everything Discovery, including essential safeguarding training. Here, you’ll get a chance to meet fellow new volunteers.

To book an induction training session, head over to the Discovery volunteering platform, the session being under the “Opportunities” tab. We offer induction training sessions either over Zoom or in-person.

Attend an informal 15 minute interview to talk through the different projects available and what you would like to get out of volunteering. You will be booked into your volunteer induction interview in the volunteer induction training session.

View our current projects on the volunteering platform, and click ‘Apply’ to any you would like to join! You will then be contacted to confirm your place on the project by the Project Coordinator.

Some Discovery projects require you to have a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. If you need to do this you will be told in your volunteer induction interview.

Some of our projects will require our volunteers to complete further training due to the nature of the project. For example, our projects centered around children, vulnerable people, or the elderly will require our volunteers to complete further safeguarding training offered by us.

All volunteers will have a volunteer ID badge. You can pick these up from the Discovery volunteering hub on Singleton Campus or in the Discovery drop in on Bay Campus every Thursday.

You are now ready to start volunteering! If you need any support with the volunteer induction process then please do get in touch with us by emailing discovery@swansea.ac.uk.
