Student Volunteering Week – 13th-19th of February 2023
Student Volunteering Week (SVW) is an annual event that celebrates student volunteering in all its glory!
This year, SVW is taking place from Monday the 13th to Sunday the 19th of February, and Discovery SVS has some amazing activities and training opportunities for you! We will be celebrating Swansea University’s student volunteers and the impact they have on the local community. Join the conversation on social media with the hashtag #SVW2023.

Sight Loss Awareness Training
Monday 13th Feb, 12.00-14.00 @ Singleton Campus
Join us for an introductory session to working with people who are blind or partially-sighted. This session will increase the attendee’s knowledge base around sight loss. Skills gained include confidence and communication.
This session will be taking place face-to-face, on Singleton Campus. You will be sent the room information the day before the training.

DIY Book Covers for Buddied Reading
Monday 13th Feb, 15.00-16.00 @ Taliesin Mall Room, Singleton Campus
Join us in making and decorating book covers to protect books children use in schools. Meet some of our Buddied Reading volunteers and find out more about this project!
Volunteers will gain experience in crafting as well as the opportunity to develop their skills in:
- communication and listening
- organising and planning
- creative thinking
- teamwork
- problem solving

“Volunteering whilst you are at University” webinar
Tuesday 14th Feb, 12.00-13.00 @ Zoom
Are you interested in making friends, learning new skills & making a difference to the local community? Would you like to gain experiences that will help support your career & enhance your employability? Discovery has over 20 projects that you can volunteer on and you can volunteer with children, young people, older adults, refugees & asylum seekers, disabled adults & practical projects. Come along to this webinar to find out more about volunteering with Discovery and meet current volunteers to hear about their experiences.

Biscuit Decorating with Age Cymru
Tuesday 14th Feb, 14.00-15.30 @ Taliesin Mall Room, Singleton Campus
Join us for a coffee morning and biscuit decorating with Age Cymru! Come and find out more about volunteering in care homes and the amazing work they do.
Volunteers will gain experience in crafting as well as the opportunity to develop their skills is:

Volunteer Induction Training
Wednesday 15th Feb, 10.00-11.30 @ Zoom
This training session is a super useful opportunity to find out what you can expect from your volunteering, how to make the most out of it and how to keep yourself safe. You’ll also get lots of information on all the perks you’ll get by being part of the Discovery team!

Positivity Cards for Penpals
Wednesday 15th Feb, 14.00-15.00 @ The Lighthouse, Singleton Campus
Join us in writing positivity cards about the benefits of volunteering to send to members of the community. Come find out more about our PenPal project and meet some of our awesome volunteers!

Suicide and Non-suicidal Self-injury in young people Training
Wednesday 15th Feb, 14.00-17.00 @ Zoom
This session will increase the attendee’s knowledge base around suicide and non-suicidal self-injury. Skills gained include communication and risk-assessment. This session will be taking place on Zoom. You will be sent the link the day before the training.

Safeguarding Training
Wednesday 15th Feb, 15.00-17.00 @ Singleton Campus
This training offers an awareness of different types of harm that some children and adults may be facing and what to do if you hear or see anything. By the end of the session you will know your role as a volunteer in relation to safeguarding adults and children from harm, abuse and neglect. This session will increase the attendee’s knowledge base around safeguarding. Skills gained include communication and risk assessment.
This session will be taking place face-to-face, on Singleton Campus. You will be sent the room information the day before the training.

Digital Media taster session
Thursday 16th Feb, 14.00-15.00 @ Bay Campus
Do you want to gain experience in creating digital media content? Come along to this taster session to find out a bit more about creating digital media content and some of the opportunities that Discovery has on offer for you. Volunteers will gain experience in digital media skills.

Litter pick
Friday 17th Feb, 14.00-15.00 @ Discovery Office, Singleton Campus
Join us for a litter pick around Singleton Park! Come and meet some of our volunteers and find out more about our practical projects. We’re meeting at the Discovery office and then make our way to Singleton Park.
